Frequently Asked Questions

Why choose a tutor? Don't all tutors teach the same thing?

A: There are many tutors out there ranging from one-to-one tuition that takes place in the tutor's home to large businesses with offices that teach in groups. It's your choice which to use. Some children work better in groups and others benefit from one-to-one. But, you need to be sure that you choose the one that is right for your child. It is a good idea to talk to a few before you decide which one you want. Each tutor/business will charge different amounts, depending on what they offer. It's tempting to go for the cheapest, but they may not necessarily be the right one for you. Get a feel for how they teach and ask lots of questions before committing.

Can you guarantee my child pass if he/she attends tuition?

A: No, of course not. No tutor can give this guarantee. A pass depends on so many factors. Following a course of study will improve your child's chances of a pass but not guarantee one.

Will I lose my fee if I miss a week?

A: Your monthly fee of £100 covers 40 lessons across the year. If you miss a week, that lesson can simply be taken at a later date.

What is the pass mark for grammar?

A: 334 is the pass mark. But, this is a constructed mark that does not indicate how many questions a child must get right in order to pass. I can explain this fully over a phone call or meeting in person.

Can I double up and have two lessons a week?

A: Yes and no. If you simply feel that adding extra hours close to the exam will greatly improve the chance of a pass, think again. Extra lessons are mainly used to fill in specific gaps, a little extra practice in a small area, or if the child has missed a lesson due to illness.

Can my child start tuition in year 4?

A: Yes, of course. I take children for early prep from October of year 4. The workbooks I use will be set at their age level, and we progress quickly to a higher level ready for year five study. I am also happy to take children from year five and help them through their journey.

What happens if I want to cancel tuition for good?

This is always a difficult decision to make, but things change and sometimes it just doesn't work out. If this happens, we can discuss the reasons and plan a "next step" for you and your child. You will be refunded for any fees left unused. No judgment is made, and I always accept your final decision.
